Michelle from A Crafty Mix gives us an inside look into her DIY life!

Where are you from? Where do you live now?

I’m from beautiful, chaotic, sunny South Africa and live with my hubby and ours kids in a little suburb called The Reeds.

How did you start DIYing?

Mmmmmmm, I honestly can’t remember. It feels like I’ve been DIY’ing forever. Growing up, my Mom was always the one that mowed the lawn, worked on the cars and did stuff. She had no problem giving my sister and I a screwdriver and telling us to go fix something. She’s a crazy, amazing woman. We only met our Dad when we were much older; they got divorced when we were still babies. And wouldn’t you know it; he’s the same kind of person. Always building stuff.

What is your DIY motto?

Just try!! A few years ago I didn’t think I would EVER be able to paint a portrait. Thank goodness a really good friend convinced me to try. Fast forward a few years later and my miniature portraits are being sold at international exhibitions and I get commissioned to paint the most amazing people. Just try

Is DIY Blogging your full time job?

Nope although I wish it was. I’m a data analyst for one of the largest banks in the country, so I spend most of my time sitting on my butt pulling data apart. It’s only on the weekends that I get to pull other things apart and make something new.

How do you find inspiration for what to DIY?

Everywhere. From the guys on the street corner selling their home made bird feeders to the beautiful people in old age homes who have so much knowledge to share, if only someone would listen. Oh, and Pinterest and Google and Hometalk, obviously 😉 It doesn’t matter where you look, something weird and wonderful and exciting is happening out there.

What’s your favorite project that you’ve done?

Oh dear, that’s a difficult one. Can I say my kids? That’s a DIY project right? Although I didn’t do that one on my own 😉 I think the one that made me feel really proud was when I replaced the entire dash in my first car and nothing blew up. And it was all my Dad’s fault. He was the one that said “if you can’t fix it you can’t drive it”. But if I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be our luggage chest of drawers. I had so much fun with that one and I love how it turned out.

What is your worst DIY fail?

LOL, how many pages can I write? Let’s see, there’s the man curtain that almost killed my poor hubby; the hobbit house that no self-respecting hobbit or Gollum would enter; the cupboard that won’t open because I put the hinge on wrong; shaking paint after I’d opened it and destroying the kitchen; taking a printer apart because it wasn’t working only to find out I’d never plugged it in …….. and the list goes on……..

What do you like to do when you aren’t DIYing?

Paint, cuddle with our fur babies and sleep 😀

Tell us something that might surprise us about you?

I’m petrified of dentists and an oven and I will never be friends.

If you are giving advice to a new DIYer what would it be?

Don’t be scared to try something. Even if it doesn’t work the first time, you would have learnt sooooo much just by doing it.
